A Sustainable Choice
Like most grasses, bamboo is a hearty plant that can quickly replenish itself. This quality makes it a sustainable alternative to wood — if harvested correctly. To ensure it’s eco-friendly status, it’s important that bamboo is sourced from responsible plantations that harvest stalk by stalk instead of clear cutting. This method allows bamboo to grow back in five to six years.
Styles and Uses
Bamboo flooring used to be made by pressing slices of stalk together to form planks. This process created a distinct pattern and limited staining options — which also limited bamboo’s stylistic appeal. However, this has all changed with the introduction of strand-woven bamboo flooring. Able to be milled and stained, strand-woven bamboo can replicate an array of hardwood looks, from the conventional to the exotic, for a fraction of the cost. This ability has made bamboo one of the most popular options for people in the market for beautiful and sustainable flooring.
Bamboo can be used in all the same areas you would use wood. Moreover, depending on how it’s manufactured, bamboo floors can be over twice as hard as many wood types. This makes it an excellent choice for high traffic areas like kitchens and living areas. However, like wood, bamboo doesn’t hold up well to excessive moisture so is not recommended for high-humidity environments like bathrooms.
Bamboo Care and Maintenance
To keep your bamboo floors in peak condition, just sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and make sure to quickly wipe up spills. If a spot needs extra attention, be sure to use bamboo-safe cleaners (harsh chemicals can damage the floor). Wet mopping and waxing is generally not recommended. It’s also a good idea to use footpads on furniture to help prevent scratches.
