Linoleum: It sounds synthetic and unattractive. When you think of your dream home and what floors you want installed, linoleum probably doesn’t even cross your mind. It’s shrouded in mystery.
At Floor Coverings International Jupiter, we love linoleum floors! Let us tell you why. We’ll start with its origins.
Where does linoleum come from?
Linoleum is made from a few different things! What’s surprising, though, is that linoleum is created from raw and natural elements. You know how flaxseeds have become popular as a nutrient-rich health food? Well, the flax plant also makes linseed oil, which is the main ingredient in linoleum floors. There are also some other components such as wood powder, powdered cork, tree resin, and limestone among others.
Why should I consider it for my home?
Linoleum isn’t the most popular flooring choice in homes, but maybe it should be considered for more than schools and hospitals! Linoleum, much like bamboo or cork flooring, is green! It’s sustainable, eco-friendly, and biodegradable. Linoleum is also resistant to fire and water as well as hypoallergenic, making it a relatively safe flooring choice. It has pretty easy maintenance and tends to be one of the less expensive flooring options, too. Linoleum also has a fairly long lifespan and can last for over 30 years.
Are there any downsides?
Every flooring option has its pros and cons and linoleum is no different. Linoleum doesn’t respond well to the harsher cleaners, so it’s best to find something natural or neutral. Some linoleum floors require waxing while other must be refinished yearly. Water damage can occur if you forget to reseal your linoleum floors and a lack of cleaning can result in dull floors.
